禁煙條例明日元旦起生效，禁煙區範圍將擴展至所有工作地方、公眾地方、食肆、不同年齡人士光顧的酒吧和卡拉OK的室內區域。禁煙區範圍亦將擴展至食物環境生署轄下的公眾街市、小販、市場、熟食小販市場、垃圾收集站和公廁的室內地方，以及康樂及文化事務署(相關新聞 - 網站)的泳灘、公眾泳池、體育場、運動場、體育館、博物館、圖書館、文娛中心及大部分的公園和遊樂場。不過，衛生署副署長梁挺雄梁挺雄說，在新修訂條例下，六類「列明合資格場所」，如符合法定條件和已知會生署署長，最遲可在二○○九年七月一日才實施禁煙。該六類「合資格場所」是包括只限18歲或以上人士進入的酒吧、浴室及按摩院、夜總會、會所內的指定麻將房及麻將天九會所。直至今日，衛生署控煙辦公室收到990份場所申請暫緩禁煙，其中795被列入列明合資格場名單，包括533間合資格酒吧、88間浴室及按摩院、56間夜總會、62間會所內的指定麻將房及56間麻將天九會所。梁挺雄鼓勵市民，尤其是吸煙人士，主動遵守新的法例規定。任何違例吸煙的人士最高可被判罰款5 000元。
